Top 6 Lawn Mowing Tips

Proper Lawn Mowing can make all the difference to your lawn and vastly improve the quality of the cut and finish.

We often inherit lawns that have been neglected and so have developed problems thanks to the lawn being too long and lawns being mowed too short. This causes stress and damage to the grass.
I suppose it makes sense, many plants like regular, but gentle “pruning” and thrive as a result of not getting too hairy. If grass is cut back harshly, sometimes lawns are not be able to recover once damage has occurred.

Here are our 6 Top Lawn Mowing Tips for a great lawn in Melbourne:
  1. Never cut the grass lower than 2.5 cms (1 inch). This length is particularly great for creating those all important stripes with a mower that has a roller on the back.
  2. Never cut off more than 1/3rd of the growth at a time, as this can shock the grass.
  3. Mow at least once a week during the Australian season from November to April and longer if circumstances dictate.
  4. Alternate the direction in which you cut the grass, this stops the grass getting accustomed to growing in one direction, which can create additional thatch and also stops tram lines from mowers.
  5. Always keep your mower blades sharp. This helps the grass to resist disease and avoids the ends of the grass having an unattractive brown top.
  6. If you can, avoid mowers which have no height adjustment. Scalping is the result of mowers that do not allow the flexibility of raising the blades, especially if your lawn is uneven. This rather unforgiving nature of the mower leads to long term brown/bare patches so these mowers are best avoided all together.

Lawn Mowing Service - South East Melbourne

What if your boss came into your office and piled an entire weeks worth of work onto your desk, and it all had to be done by Friday? If he did it first thing Monday morning, that wouldn’t be so bad. But what if he unloaded it on you Wednesday at lunchtime? Well, welcome to our world of  Lawn Mowing.

Our Wettest & Weirdest weather in recent memory has swept us all off our feet.  Nature’s nonstop car wash, has added many challenges to an already taxing time in 2011.

What’s our policy on working in the rain?
It beats not having a job in the dry!!

Stuff is growing like CRAZY!! Some of it is literally taking on a life of its own. Did you hear, out in Cheltenham, a seven-year old kicked a soccer ball into an overgrown garden; it held him hostage for three hours !!

A Brighton man was treated and released from Monash Medical Centre after some bushes jumped him on the way out to get the paper. It’s like the movie "Little Shop of Horrors". Why not let us tame your Unenchanted Forest?

We’ve got Pruners, Hedgers and Chainsaws for the tall stuff. We have Honda Line Trimmers for the tough stuff, Weeding tools for the low stuff, and Round-Up for the stuff that needs to meet its maker.

We also have Tall ladders to unstop those overflowing gutters, plus clippers and trailers to clean up storm damage.

We service Wheelers Hill, Glen Waverley, Notting Hill, Mulgrave and surrounding suburbs !!

Frequently asked Questions.

I only want my grass cut every two weeks, but can you cut it lower so it lasts longer?

Sure, then we’ll bring in our bobcat and dig out some fresh top soil for your garden.
Sadly, this is a popular request that sounds good in theory but stinks. It just doesn’t work.

You just mowed and I’ve got a bunch of clippings. What can we do?

Have us cut more often, at least until things slow down. Eighty percent of clippings-related complaints come from customers whose mowing frequency is 10 days or longer (the other twenty percent comes from this one dude out in Meadow Heights that we just can’t seem to get rid of). In a period like this where the grass is growing faster than Twitter, anything less than fortnightly mowing probably isn’t going to produce that country club look.

Lawn Care in Autumn

Autumn is a critical time in the lawn care calendar. Help to prepare the lawn to make it through the difficult winter months and ensure that your lawn looks its best come the Spring.

Mowing

As the weather starts to change the grass will be growing much more slowly. Adjust the cutting height on your lawnmower so that it cuts the grass higher. Mow about once a fortnight until about mid October, depending on the weather conditions.
Recut the lawn edges with a half moon edging iron to create a neat finish.
Trim the lawn edges every week using lawn-edging shears to give a neat finish.

Lawn Repairs

Be sure to sweep up fallen autumn leaves and to keep the lawn free from debris.

New Lawns

Autumn is a very good time to sow a new lawn from seed. The soil is still warm from the summer and the autumn rain will provide vital moisture as the new lawn develops. It is vital to prepare the soil thoroughly and to keep the developing lawn properly watered.
